This is a funky collab that took place over the internet! There was a whole page dedicated to this, with several contributors, but this song is the best one of the bunch. You can check out the rest here: (sounds great in Windows Media Player!)
mg - Mystic (1998) | SC-88 |
mg has a deliciously groovy and loungey style, with an affinity to repeated half-step melodies. I think this is my favorite work of his, but it was a close race between this and "By the Way". Be sure to check out the rest of the midis on his page. mg often has a version of each song for SC-55 and SC-88. This particular MIDI was optimized for the SC-88. Some voices drop out when played on Windows Media Player...
| XG | |
It opens with some XG train sfx, which is a bit silly for my tastes, but the groove after that? Choice.
luis caldeira - te quiero (1999) | GM |
I'll admit that I'm not sure if this is from 1999 or earlier... just that it's one of the earlier tunes listed on his site. So what's within here? A bolero built around a bassline. I'm still unclear on what a bolero is, but hell yeah.
John Malvey - Riviera (1996) | GM |
A smooth and laid back groove, mostly on rhodes and epiano and such, but with just the right amount of brass. This guy has apparently written for some stock music libraries, though I couldn't find them.
Unknown Author - Whale Song (199x) | XG |
Sadly the only song here that I can't ascertain an author or a date. :( However, it's too good to not share. What an absolute showcase of what XG can do! I suspect it might be a demo song.

| SC-88 | |
What an absolute J-pop banger! The original website includes a download with liner notes and a music video(!). Included within those liner notes is a bit of self-deprecation, saying the song sounds like a certain MきはらNりゆきさん and "typical pop". Noriyuki Makihara? Typical? I dunno, but I love it. (Warning: does not play properly in Windows Media Player!)

This is a tune that strikes a balance between a laid back energy and a driving rhythm. Add a beautiful melody on top and it's a keeper. Emanuele Angelino describes it as "between pop and rock" on his website, but man. It's pure vibes to me.
Jack Hall - Sly Feel (1999) | GM |
imo, a common issue among original MIDI music is that it's kinda cheesy. This romantic fella falls into that a lot, but sometimes the feeling hits just right. The rhythms here feel almost Shakatak to me. Short but sweet.
BASHI - 秋色の風鈴 (1992) | GM |
The title translates to "Autumn-colored wind chimes". Apparently it was made in celebration of the acquisition of a midi guitar, and features extensive soloing and improv. But also... it's just a hell of a vibe. Autumn does that, I suppose.
Aaron Walz - Field of Wind (1998) | GM |
Aaron Walz has said he's inspired by VGM, and fascinatingly, it REALLY shows. This song has a distinctly 16-bit JRPG feeling.
Jef Fiorini - 418c (1999) | GM |
This guy's really bad at titling and tagging. This 2FA code inspired song is actually quite simple and kinda... not great. But, you know how sometimes "bad" music is actually really good? This is that. It was a really tough call deciding between this and the slapper of a song that is "Aimee's Wish", but...what is that, G major, G minor, and then a stack of 5ths with a sort of implied A#maj7? It's so simple but it tickles me! I might remix this just for fun, one day.

Tired of diatonic MIDIs? Derek's got you covered. This sounds straight out of cuneiform records. Apparently that was an inspiration too! Absolutely be sure to check out the rest of his tunes too! It was a tough call to pick between featuring this vs "Lateef"!!
Buzz Lerch - Corpus Colossal (1997) | GM |
MIDI rock is hard to pull off, if you ask me. After you've heard e1m1, where do you really go from there, right? Well, you go here. The half-step shifts and jazzy touch keep this one sounding fresh! Buzz Lerch has a smattering of other tunes on his website, but this one hits the hardest. (sounds great in Windows Media Player!)
Chris Seaton - Awaken (1997) | GM |
This is a prog rock adventure but also it's beautifully suited to MSGS. Seriously, even if you have a better piece of kit, give this a listen in Windows Media Player. That's the way MIDI is supposed to sound. This is also another case of "there's more tunes to peruse but this one stands high above the rest".
Haoken - Utsusiyo (2000) | XG |
What if you mixed some traditional Japanese instrumentation with rock&roll energy? Sadly, this is the only song by the author that I'm aware of. What a showing though.

I wouldn't say all of these tunes are lost, but they all required some digging on my part. Hopefully they encouraged you to dig a little bit, too.
If you want to dig through MY tunes (not MIDI but sometimes MIDI inspired), I have a bandcamp. :)
